About the Onion Family ...
The onion family include onions, chives, garlic, scallions, shallots and leeks. This family contain allium compounds which protect against cancer, especially of the stomach and GI (gastro-intestinal) tract. These vegetables also reduce the risk of heart disease. Onions help with blood sugar control in diabetics. The rate of stomach cancer among onion eaters is half of those who eat no onions. You can add onions to your soups, to entrees, to vegetable and bean dishes and to salads. Organosulfides are the allium compounds which induce cell enzymes which detoxify carcinogens and exhibit antiobitic properties to lower stomach ulcers and cancer. Garlic, when crushed, produces allicin which reduces cholesterol. Garlic also reduces blood pressure. It is a natural antibiotic, anti-viral, anti-parasitic and anti-fungal. It is even touted to improve memory! Add garlic to your stir-fries, chop them up fine and spread them over your bread spread with peanut butter, bake them with your potato wedges, put them in your salad dressings, loaves and roasts and use them in creative ways to enhance your health. Never mind the garlic breath! You can always pop some mints to give you a fresh breath.
